Police said that the officer was dragged for at least a block as he attempted to apprehend the suspects, and at least one gunshot was fired during a chase that started in Mount Vernon and wound up in the Bronx. The incident led to an intense manhunt and a Bronx high school was put in lockdown as a precaution.
The chase began at approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, near the Mount Vernon-Bronx border. The suspects were spotted approaching a BMW with Pennsylvania license plates that was recently reported stolen.
According to police, when an officer attempted to stop them, the driver took off, and the officer was dragged and an officer fired one round at the two suspects. No one was struck by the bullet. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and evaluation.
The two suspects eventually crashed into another car and fled on foot. They remain on the loose and evaded a police manhunt on Thursday that included the use of K9 units. Roadways in the Bronx were temporarily blocked off by police as they conducted their search of the suspects.
According to an NBC New York report, Surveillance video shows the pursuit and crash, then a man wearing a blue and white shirt running from plainclothes officers along Pittman Avenue. Moments later, another officer was seen walking on the sidewalk, an unholstered gun dangling at his right side.
